  • ✨PROJECT MONTY✨ Monty came to me in January. He lost his eye when he was living on the streets and spent months looking for a home in Turkey with no luck, so I offered to take him in. He arrived with big wounds on three of his legs. His back legs have completely healed but his front leg continuously has open wounds on it, no matter what u do to treat it. A few weeks ago I decided enough was enough and it was time to focus on finding the root cause of the issue. Last week, I took him to see a specialist. His blood was sent to be tested for allergies, and he has been diagnosed with Acral Lick Granuloma. This means that something (potentially allergies, or boredom from being alone in a kennel when he couldn't find a home) initially triggered him to lick and bite his legs and it became a habit. The more he licks, the more painful and sensitive the leg becomes, making him want to lick more and creating a vicious cycle that he can't break. There is no set cure for acral lick granuloma, Monty is wearing a cone at the moment to stop him from licking, but as soon as it comes off he starts again as he can't kick the habit. Does anyone have any experience with this, and if so do you have any advice? . . . . . . . . . #instadogs #dogsofinsta #rescuedog #woofwoof #adoptdontshop #dog #doglovers #doge #doggylove #dogsofinstagram #doggy #puppylove #ilovemydog #woof #dogoftheday #puppy #pup #puppiesofinstagram #doglove #puppers #doggies #dogstime #dogstagram #dogoftheday #dogsofig #dogslife #doggylove #dogsrule #dogscorner #mustlovedogs #stray

Most commonly it is a severe reaction to stress and/or boredom. With licking his paws or other parts of his body the dog has found a monotone routine to set free endorphines. Other dogs chase their tail for hours for example. The only solution for this is to distract the dog, keep him busy and allow him to get rid of his routine. Sadly this takes a lot of effort and the progress is very slowly. Another possibility is a problem with his digestion or gastrointestinal tract, caused by parasites, an inflammation or allergy to his food. Dogs tend to lick themselves when they suffer from nausea. To see if it's an allergy you could change his food, (no grains for example), more complicated would be an allergy to mites. Anyway, you could give the medicine 'Apoquel' a try, a cortisonfree medicine against allergies for dogs. A blood test or check at the vet to see if he suffers from an inflammation would help, too.

Is there any chance someone local could foster him? I would have thought lessening anxiety and a feeling of safety would be a good start?? Someone to keep a closer eye on him and also distract him from this behaviour xoxo

My dog used to do this.. the cone is great! When the cone is taken off there is a spray that you can spray on the areas that give an extremely bad taste.. once he tries to go at it again he won’t like it

You might try Zylkene to ease his stress. It’s easily available on Amazon and may help. 🐕

Hi did you try an infra red lamp light it penetrates several inches into the body tissue as well as bones and kills infection as well as helps to heal. If he has not got a fever only. Thank you for the info for adoption to the UK. The lamp can be the on that is used for people a hand held one and if you try 3 times 5 mins probably 20 cm from the wounds it would help also do not look directly into the lamp or close to the source of the light.
